White-backed Maple

Narrow-leaved Drunken Fish Grass, a plant of the genus Drunken Fish Grass in the family Strychnaceae.

Morphological Characteristics

An evergreen shrub, 1–1.5 meters tall. Branches in the upper part, densely covered with white tomentum; young stems are quadrangular. Simple leaves are opposite, with short petioles up to 6 mm long; leaf blades are lanceolate, about 12 cm long, with a narrow, long, acuminate apex and a narrow cuneate base; margins are entire or sparsely serrate; upper surface is green, lower surface is grayish-white and densely covered with tomentum.White, fragrant flowers bloom in summer and fall. The spike-like inflorescences are terminal and subterminal axillary, forming conical clusters covered with yellowish-gray tomentum; the calyx is bell-shaped and 4-lobed at the apex; the corolla is tubular and 4-lobed; there is a single stamen; the ovary is 2-chambered, with multiple ovules in each chamber. The capsule is elliptical, about 6 mm long.The seeds are very small.
