Instructions for Use

For caning wounds, take one sheet of oiled paper. Cut it to 9 cun 5 fen in length and 1 chi 1 cun in width using a wooden ruler. Fold it so that one side has holes pricked with a needle, and spread the ointment on the other side. Fold the paper over to enclose the ointment inside, then apply the side with holes directly to the affected area. Wrap it securely with mulberry bark paper, and then bind it tightly with foot-wrapping cloth for best results. Leave it on for one fu, then remove it. After use, wash the area thoroughly with a cleansing decoction, then wipe the ointment clean and reapply the original ointment. Even severe cases will heal within three applications at most. For those who have undergone severe torture, fold four square pieces of oiled paper together, each double-folded, and prepare four such pieces. As before, prick small holes in one side, spread the ointment on one side, and apply it to the affected area. Wrap it with fresh cotton, then secure it tightly with a leg-wrapping bandage. Change the dressing every 5–6 days. This ointment should be applied immediately after preparation. Store it in a lidded bowl to prevent air from entering; if it dries out and becomes difficult to spread, rehydrate it by steaming with boiling water.
