Drug Formulation

2.5 qian of pure frankincense, 2.5 qian of myrrh, 2.5 qian of dragon’s blood resin (all ground together into a fine, uniform powder); half a liang of Trichosanthes seed (shell removed, finely sliced); half a liang of Angelica root (root tip removed, finely sliced); half a liang of apricot kernels (soaked in hot water, skinned, and ground); 2 liang of women’s combed-out oily hair (washed with soapberry); 6 liang of orpiment (water-washed).

Processing

First, place 10 liang of clear oil in a sand pot. Add the Trichosanthes seed, Chinese angelica root, apricot kernels, and women’s combed, oily hair, and simmer over low heat until they turn black. Filter out the residue using cotton cloth. Return the oil to the pot, then add the yellow丹 to the oil. Immediately use 10 peach twigs and 10 willow twigs to stir continuously,simmering over low heat. After some time, drip the oil onto the surface of water; if it coagulates into beads that do not disperse, use your finger to pick up an oil bead to form a paste. Immediately remove the sand pot from the heat. Then add frankincense, myrrh, and dragon’s blood to the pot, stirring continuously until well blended. Transfer the ointment to a separate earthenware container and place it in freshly drawn water to remove the heat toxicity.

Instructions for Use

When ready to use, spread the ointment onto oil-coated paper that has been boiled in Phellodendron bark, and apply it to the affected area. Change the dressing once every 1–2 days.
