Formula

30 grams of Dangshen, 20 grams of Astragalus, 15 jujubes, and 20 grams of brown sugar.

Usage: 20 Grams
Benefits: Tonifies qi and raises yang; consolidates the exterior and stops sweating; promotes diuresis and reduces swelling; generates body fluids and nourishes blood; dispels stagnation and relieves arthralgia; expels toxins and drains pus; astringes sores and promotes tissue regeneration.

Usage: 15 Grain
Benefits: Tonifies the middle and boosts qi; nourishes blood and calms the mind.

How To Make

Rinse the Codonopsis and Astragalus separately, slice them, and place them together in a clay pot. Add water and decoct twice, for 30 minutes each time. Combine the two decoctions and set aside. Place the red dates in a pot, add the Codonopsis and Astragalus decoction along with an appropriate amount of water, and add brown sugar. Simmer until it becomes a thick drink.

Efficacy

Nourishes the heart and spleen; increases white blood cell count. Suitable for leukopenia caused by deficiency of both the heart and spleen. Symptoms include dizziness and vertigo, mental fatigue and weakness, insomnia with frequent dreaming, decreased appetite, abdominal distension and loose stools, nausea, a sallow and lusterless complexion, a pale tongue with a thin white coating, and a fine, weak pulse.

Usage

Take one dose in the morning and one in the evening.

Commentary

Taking Codonopsis (Dang-shen) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its sweet flavor and neutral property: it travels through the Spleen, Lung meridians and works to tonify qi, strengthen the spleen and nourish the lung.

Astragalus (Huang-qi) serve as the deputy herb; slightly warm and sweet in character, it travels through the Spleen, Lung meridians to tonify qi, raise yang, secure the exterior and promote the discharge of pus.

Finally, Jujubes (Da-zao) play the envoy role, unifying the formula; its role is to tonify qi, nourish blood and harmonize the herbs and coordinate the herbs. United, the ingredients nourish the heart and spleen, increases white blood cell count, addressing the root disturbance of the heart and spleen pattern.
