Commentary
Taking Amomum villosum (Sha-ren) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its pungent flavor and warm property: it channels into the Spleen, Stomach, Kidney meridians and works to move qi, warm the middle and resolve dampness. Walnut kernels (He-tao-ren) take the deputy (minister) role; warm and sweet in character, it travels through the Kidney, Lung, Large Intestine meridians to tonify the kidney, warm the lung and moisten the intestines. Finally, brown sugar (Hong-tang) serves as the envoy herb, harmonizing the whole; its role is to warm the middle, activate blood and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Working as one, the formula nourish the kidneys and consolidates essence, thereby targeting the qi pattern that underlies the complaint.
