Drug Formulation

Bupleurum (from Yinzhou; remove the stalks and tips; use a silver knife to shave off a small amount of the thin yellow skin; wipe clean with coarse cloth; chop finely; do not expose to fire) 7 qian; Cimicifuga (unexposed to rain or sunlight; emerald green in color; peel the skin; soak in Polygonatum juice overnight; sun-dry; chop; steam; sun-dry again) 3 qian;Pueraria Root (select pure white, plump, and tender specimens; moisten thoroughly with snowwater or autumn dew; slice; air-dry in the shade) 9 qian,Qianghuo (remove the root tip, finely chop, mix with Epimedium and let stand for 3 days, sun-dry, then remove the Epimedium) 5 qian, Fangfeng (do not use specimens with forked roots or tails; forked roots cause madness, and forked tails cause chronic diseases; select plump, large, supple, yellow, and smooth specimens and finely chop) 5 qian,Licorice (select those with a yellow center and uniform texture; remove the top and bottom tips—each 45 cun—and use only the middle section; cut into pieces about one cun long; place in a porcelain vessel, soak in good wine, and steam from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM; remove, sun-dry, and finely chop)7 qian 5 fen, Anemarrhena (finely chopped on a locust wood cutting board, then pounded several thousand times in a wooden mortar; do not use iron utensils) 7 qian, Gypsum (select pure white gypsum resembling a bundle of needles; grind extremely fine; wash three times with licorice water; clarify and drain the water; sun-dry and grind again) 3 liang,Peach Kernels (remove the skin; place in a porcelain vessel with Atractylodes and Black Soybeans; boil for 3 fu; remove when split open to reveal a golden-yellow interior; sun-dry; then pound into a paste) 5 qian; Safflower (soak briefly in a millet-grain-sized solution; remove; squeeze out the yellow juice using a cloth bag; mix with Artemisia annua and let stand overnight; sun-dry)3 qian 5 fen, Poria (scrape off the black skin with a copper knife; slice thinly; soak in east-flowing water overnight, then remove; grind finely; mix with Cimicifuga leaves and steam for one day; remove the leaves; sun-dry; if leaves are unavailable, Cimicifuga root alone may be used) 9 qian,Carp and Crucian Carp Scales (take scales near the tail; soak in good wine for one day; dig a hole in clean, elevated ground; heat charcoal until red-hot; place the scales in the hole; cover with a clean tile; pack soil firmly over the tile to prevent air leakage; wait until cool, then remove and grind into powder; dig another hole, bury the scales overnight, and retrieve them the next morning for use) 5 qian 5 fen, glutinous rice 1 he (rinsed clean).

Instructions for Use

Add 3 sheng 5 he of water to the ingredients above. First, boil the glutinous rice until the volume is reduced by half a sheng; remove the rice. Then, boil the remaining ingredients together until the volume is reduced to 1.5 sheng; strain out the residue, and divide the decoction into three doses. Take the first dose during the hours of Yin and Mao: boil the decoction a few more times, then wait until the patient is fast asleep before gently waking them to take it; after taking it, cover them to induce a light sweat;Take the second dose about half an hour before the fever is due to rise; after taking it, keep warm and avoid severe chills; the fever will gradually subside; take the third dose about half an hour after the fever has risen; about half an hour after taking it, sip about one zhan of warm congee to replenish the ying and wei qi; do not eat anything else, as it may impair the efficacy of the medicine.
