Drug Formulation

Perilla leaves (also known as borneol mint), 2 liang of Astragalus, 4 liang of Ophiopogon (with the core removed), 1.5 liang of licorice, 1 liang of Coptis, 6 liang of dried Rehmannia (ground into powder), 2 liang of ginseng, 2 liang of Akebia, 2 liang of fresh Polygonum cuspidatum pollen, 2 liang of donkey-hide gelatin (roasted until charred),Bupleurum (the red variety from Yinzhou with a mouse-tail shape) 2 liang (chopped; steeped with Akebia in half a sheng of boiling water for one day and one night, then strained to extract the juice).

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Use slightly over 2 jin of high-quality honey from the Western Regions; first boil it for 1–2 boils, then add the powdered raw Rehmannia root, stirring constantly. Gradually add the strained Akebia and Bupleurum juice, and simmer over low heat until it becomes a paste, taking care not to let the heat become too intense, lest it burn. Then, use the remaining powdered mixture to form pills the size of peas.

Instructions for Use

Take 20 pills per dose, washed down with plain hot water. For consumptive fever with restlessness, take with Gardenia Decoction; for lung heat, take with Scutellaria Decoction; for heart heat with palpitations and mental confusion, take with Ginseng Decoction; for spitting, coughing up, or nosebleeds with blood, take with Ophiopogon Decoction (without the heart); for spleen-stomach heat, take with Red Peony and Raw Licorice Decoction; for liver heat, take with Fangfeng Decoction;for kidney heat, take with Huang Bai Decoction. For all the above conditions, take after meals or before bedtime. To treat the five types of dysuria and women’s metrorrhagia and menorrhagia, take with Che Qian Zi Decoction; for pain in the penis, take Pu Huang and Hua Shi (each 1 qian), mixed with warm water; for young women with consumptive disease and alternating chills and fever, take with a decoction of Chai Hu and Ren Shen; for cough with phlegm, take with Ginger Decoction; for qi reversal, take with Ju Pi Decoction.
