Drug Formulation

3 liang of lead丹 (roasted until purple), 6 liang of clear sesame oil, 40 apricot kernels (with skin and tips intact, crushed, and wrapped in cotton), half a liang of angelica root (finely chopped and wrapped in cotton), 21 peach twigs (1 cun long), and 21 willow twigs (1 cun long).

Processing

First, simmer the oil over low heat for about 3 shichen. Then add the two bundles containing the apricot kernels and Angelica sinensis. Wait until the apricot kernels turn yellowish-purple, then strain out these two ingredients. Next, add the peach and willow twigs and simmer; strain them out when they reach the same stage as the apricot kernels.Filter the liquid through a separate piece of gauze and simmer again. Add lead丹, stirring continuously with a willow wood spatula in a constant counterclockwise motion. When the mixture thickens, take a small amount of the ointment and drop it into water; if it sinks straight to the bottom without spreading across the surface, the ointment is ready. Pour it into a porcelain container and let it cool. Then soak it in freshly drawn water overnight; the next morning, drain the water and store the ointment.
