Drug Formulation

5 liang of Sichuan rhubarb (1 part wine-processed, 1 part ginger-processed, 1 part salt-soaked, 1 part white alum-soaked; thoroughly soaked, then steamed and sun-dried nine times each), 3 liang of Scrophularia root (cleaned; soaked in salt water until thoroughly saturated), 3 liang of Perilla (cleaned and ground into powder), 3 liang of Pueraria root, 3 liang of Bupleurum root, 3 liang of Elsholtzia, 2 liang 5 qian of Forsythia, 2 liang of Notopterygium, 2 liang 5 qian of Angelica dahurica, 2 liang of Saposhnikovia root,Schizonepeta 2 liang, Scutellaria 2 liang (half raw, half stir-fried with wine), Agastache 2 liang, Fructus Aurantii 2 liang, Trichosanthes Root 2 liang, Mentha 1 liang 5 qian, Red Peony Root 1 liang 5 qian, Raw Licorice 1 liang 5 qian (stir-fried with wheat bran), Clematis 1 liang (stir-fried with wine), Asarum 6 qian.

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Extract juice from tender Artemisia annua tips and mix it with Chen Cang rice paste to form pills weighing 3 qian each.

Instructions for Use

Select a guide herb according to the symptoms; for epidemic plague with purplish-black spots and a purplish-black tongue and lips, urgently use 2–3 qian of raw rhubarb and 1–2 qian of gypsum decocted as a guide;For a rash known as “red cloth,” which is often accompanied by a swollen throat—a condition with a 90% mortality rate—immediately use 3 qian of Arctium lappa seeds, 2 qian of black plum, 3 qian of indigo powder, 3 qian of Platycodon root, and 1 qian of licorice root to prepare a decoction for oral administration; then use this same formula as a guide to prepare pills for ingestion; for headache, fever, and absence of sweat, use scallions and ginger as guides;For fever accompanied by mottled spots and a rash, use Cimicifuga root as the guide herb; for epidemic plagues such as “big-head plague,” use Arctium lappa seeds and Indigo naturalis as guide herbs; for malaria, use Changshan and Amomum villosum as guide herbs; for dysentery, watery diarrhea, and abdominal pain, use Akebia as the guide herb; for pregnant women with fever and delirium, use Ophiopogon and Bamboo leaves as guide herbs; for typhoid fever with fever and aversion to cold, use scallions and ginger as guide herbs.
