Instructions for Use

Select the finest grade, rinse with water to remove silt and sand, sun-dry and roast until dry, then soak in strong rice vinegar for several days. Next, place in a wok and stir-fry until the cinnabar turns bright red. Pour onto the ground, cover with a bowl, wait for the heat to dissipate, and store tightly in a porcelain jar. When ready to use, depending on the thickness of the beard, take 1 qian or 2–3 qian of the powder, grind it finely, mix it with an equal amount of buckwheat flour, and then adjust the consistency with strong vinegar cooled to the right temperature. Heat it over a double boiler to form a thick paste. On the first night before bed, first wash away the oil and grease from the beard with warm soapy water made from soap pods. Next, use two bamboo combs to pick up the medicine and apply it to the beard, including the roots. This remedy does not damage the skin or flesh; the only concern is that the application may not be thick enough. Therefore, first boil lotus leaves in hot water until soft. Depending on the thickness of the mustache, cut them into pieces, place them between layers of thin, coarse paper, and press out the excess moisture before use. Once the medicine is applied evenly, cover the area completely with the cut lotus leaves, ensuring a tight seal. Wrap the area in silk and tie it securely to prevent staining of clothing and bedding, and to keep the lotus leaves in place. The next morning, wash the area gently with warm water; the white parts will have turned yellow, and the yellow parts will have turned black. It is fine to wash your face with soapberry and mung bean powder, but be careful not to stain your hands—you must be patient, as your fingers may turn black. Reapply the medicine on the second night.
