Instructions for Use

On the Mid-Autumn Festival each year, have the patient eat until full and lie on their back. Mix buckwheat flour with hot water to form a dough, roll it into a rope, and form a ring around the navel, about one cun in diameter. If the navel is larger, make the ring wider. Fill the ring with the powdered mixture of the above herbs. Take a piece of locust tree bark, peel off the coarse outer layer, and use only a layer half fen thick to cover the ring of medicine.Moxibustion should be applied using moxa cones the size of a bean; stop as soon as a slight warmth is felt within the navel. Replace the acacia bark with a new piece as soon as it begins to char.Do not allow pain to occur; pain will cause the true qi to dissipate. Continue the moxibustion until the number of moxa cones equals the patient’s age in years. If hunger is felt during the treatment, eat and then resume moxibustion. Signs of effectiveness include cold sweat pouring like rain, rumbling or pain in the abdomen, or the passage of mucus and foam in the stool. Consume only thick rice porridge, white meat, and good wine to enhance the efficacy of the medicine.
