Drug Formulation

Half liang of Clove buds, half liang of Chuanxiong, half liang of White Ginger (washed and soaked), half liang of Shenqu, half liang of Wood Fragrance, half liang of Cinnamon Bark, half liang of Luo Shen, 2 large Cardamom pods (roasted, seeds removed),7 Chebulic Myrobalan fruits (pulp removed), 21 grains of Amomum villosum, 7.5 qian of Curcuma zedoaria (roasted), 7.5 qian of Glycyrrhiza uralensis (roasted), 14 seeds of Croton tiglium (shell and membrane removed, oil retained; soaked in cold water overnight, then ground separately into a paste and set aside in a mortar).

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix thoroughly in the mortar, sift the croton paste through the mixture again, and transfer the mixture to a earthenware box. Cover the box opening with oiled paper, then melt beeswax mixed with pine resin and seal the box securely according to standard procedure. Every December, bury the box 3 chi deep in the ground on high, dry ground; retrieve it during the Middle of the Dog solar term in the following June. Spread the contents in a breezy place to remove moisture, then store them in a leak-proof earthenware jar and seal it tightly.

Instructions for Use

For robust individuals, take half a qian per dose. Before bedtime, mix it with half a zhan of water that has been boiled 100 times, drink it all at once, lie on your back for a short while, and then slowly wash it down with warm white congee. For frail or weak individuals, take only 1 zi.

Note

Avoid raw, cold, bloody, greasy, and hard foods for 1–2 months. Pregnant women should not take this remedy.
