Drug Formulation

10 shi of coarse, plump Rehmannia root (sliced and pounded to extract 3 shi of juice); 1 shi of hemp seeds (ground into powder and mixed with the Rehmannia juice to extract 2 shi 7 dou of liquid); 1 shi of apricot kernels (peeled, de-tipped, and split into two halves, then ground into powder and mixed with the hemp seed liquid to extract 2 shi 5 dou of liquid); 3 dou of malt powder.

Processing

Soak the qu with the juices of rehmannia and other ingredients for 7 days. When it comes to a boil, add 3 shi of rice, divided into 3 portions, and stir once. Mix in 5 dou of the medicinal juice to brew the wine, following the method for home-brewed wine: add one portion every 3 days, for a total of 3 additions over 9 days.Once fermentation is complete, seal the container tightly for 3–7 days; ghee will rise to the surface of the wine, its color resembling gold. Skim it off with a utensil to obtain 9 da sheng of ghee. Then retrieve the wine and seal it. Have the patient consume the wine lees; once the lees are completely consumed, the patient may then take the medicinal wine and ghee.

Instructions for Use

For each dose, take 1 sheng of wine and 1 spoonful of ghee; mix the ghee into the warm wine and consume it. Dry the remaining rehmannia residue in the sun, then mix it with 3 sheng of wine and pound it; dry it again, form it into cakes, and consume them.

Note

It is advisable to eat white rice and turnips. Avoid raw and cold foods, sour and slippery foods, as well as pork, chicken, fish, and garlic.
