Drug Formulation
2 liang of Xuan Huanglian, 2 liang of Hezi, 1 liang of Danggui, 1 qian of copper patina (coarsely crush the above ingredients; soak them in 3 sheng of river water for two days and nights; boil the mixture in a silver or stone vessel to extract the juice—approximately one large bowlful; add 8 fen of the prepared solution until the residue turns black; strain the liquid through raw silk; then boil it again over high and low heat,stir with locust and willow twigs until a drop of liquid forms a bead when dropped into water; then mix into the ointment and compound), 2 wild boar pancreases (first remove the fat; wrap in rice straw and medicinal plant tops, rub and wash in water until all fat is removed; cut into pieces and add to the Coptis ointment; boil until black; remove and set aside for use),1 liang of reed-charred glycyrrhiza (quench in 1 large bowl of children’s urine over a charcoal fire until the urine is completely absorbed; stop when the reed-charred glycyrrhiza turns powdery white; grind into a fine powder), 4 liang of orpiment (rinse thoroughly with fresh well water, sift to remove impurities, and bake until dry), 10 goose pears (peel and remove the cores with a bamboo knife; extract the juice using raw cloth),6 qian of rock salt (ground into a fine powder), 1 jin of honey (refined to remove wax and impurities; stop heating after one boil).

Processing
Take the pear juice and boil it with the gypsum powder for 5–7 boils; add the rock salt and stir with a willow branch until the mixture turns brown. Pour into a porcelain jar and immerse it in ice-cold water to remove the heat toxicity. It is best prepared in the 12th lunar month; the 1st and 11th lunar months are next best; it should not be prepared in any other month.
