Drug Formulation

2 jin of ephedra (remove knots; use 1 jin, cleaned), 4 liang of apricot kernels (soak in hot water; remove skins and tips; pound to a paste in a sand mortar; add water and pound again; strain to remove sediment; use the clear juice), 4 liang of Fangfeng (remove the root base), 4 liang of Lycium bark (remove the woody core; clean), 4 liang of licorice,14 Mu-bie seeds (shells removed), 1 handful of human hair (washed in warm water), 1 large handful of lampwick, 1 piece of black lead.

Processing

Method for boiling the decoction into a paste: Do not use firewood; use 50 jin of white charcoal and one large iron pot. Place the above herbs in the pot, add 2–3 buckets of clean water, and boil until the liquid is reduced to 5–6 parts. When the decoction becomes thick, strain out the residue and transfer the liquid to a separate jar;Then return the residue to the pot, add 1–2 buckets of water, and boil down to 5–6 parts again. Pour this decoction into the previous liquid. Repeat this process three times, straining out the residue each time; combine the liquids from the first two boilings into a single pot and simmer until dry. The resulting ointment has a sweet, fragrant aroma and should be stored in a porcelain jar, where it will remain stable for five years.

Instructions for Use

For each episode of illness, take 3 qian per dose. Mix the ointment with strong hot wine and take it before bedtime. Cover yourself with a thick blanket until a profuse sweat breaks out. Gradually remove the blanket, taking care to avoid drafts. The next morning, consume braised pig’s trotters to replenish vitality and restore vital energy, as sweating may lead to weakness. Mix the trotters with good wine according to one’s tolerance, drinking until intoxicated. Once the sweat breaks out, recovery is immediate.
