Drug Formulation

Source

From *Formulas Based on Clinical Experience*, Volume 1.

Benefits

Effective for all types of abscesses and boils, toxic sores of varying sizes, and unexplained swellings; also treats wind-heat toothache, headache, sore throat, tonsillitis, and all conditions characterized by excess.

Instructions for Use

Grind the ingredients into a fine powder. Take a pot suitable for reducing medicines, and mix in the ingredients one by one. Heat over low flame until a paste forms; if the fire is too strong, the mercury will escape. The consistency should be neither too soft nor too hard—if too hard, the pot will crack and the mercury will leak out; if too soft, the paste will collapse. Place the pot inside a large bowl, seal the opening with salt-mixed clay, and surround the sides with ash, leaving the top exposed. Begin with a gentle flame, using one piece of charcoal to fan the fire until one stick of incense has burned out. Add another piece of charcoal and continue fanning until the second stick of incense has burned out. Then, use a strong flame with plenty of charcoal to intensify the heat, continuing until the fourth stick of incense has burned out. Allow to cool before removing. If the paste is too soft and falls into the bowl, retrieve it, grind it into a fine powder, add mercury and white alum, and refine it again. The best result is a substance as white as frost and shaped like borneol. If it turns pine-green or pale yellow, its potency is weaker, so use a larger quantity. Grind it into an extremely fine powder and store it in a lime jar; keep it away from moisture. The longer it is aged, the better it becomes.Do not ingest; do not use in large quantities. When using, sprinkle it onto the ointment—just enough to be barely noticeable.

Note

Do not use on open sores.
