Drug Formulation

4 liang of black lead, 2 qian of mercury.

From *Shou Shi Bao Yuan*, Volume 6.

Processing

First, melt the lead into a liquid. Then add the mercury; when it solidifies into leaf-like pieces, cut them into coin shapes. Thread them onto iron wire to make 2–3 strings for later use. Next, take a large porcelain jar and fill it with 3 bowls of high-quality, unsalted vinegar. Place the lead coins inside the jar and suspend them above the vinegar, keeping them 2 fingers’ width away from the liquid. Soak two pieces of selaginella fern in the vinegar,4 qian of duckbill alum. Seal the opening with a porcelain saucer, then seal it securely with yellow clay. In summer, expose it to the midday sun for seven days; in winter, bake it over rice bran embers for seven days. Remove it, punch a hole in the bottom of the jar to drain off the vinegar (discard the vinegar), lift the saucer, and brush off the medicinal powder. Wrap it in animal fat skin and store it.

Instructions for Use

When ready to use, wash the beard and hair with warm water. While still damp, wrap your finger in animal fat skin and dab the medicinal powder onto the beard and hair; it will naturally darken them right down to the roots.

Note

Avoid washing with scented soap or soapy water.
