Drug Formulation

1 woodpecker caught in the 12th lunar month (using 3 sheng of ash-free liquor: first, line the bottom of a clay jar with a 1-cun-thick layer of Schizonepeta spikelets and leaves, then place the woodpecker on top; cover with another 1-cun-thick layer of Schizonepeta spikelets and leaves, pour the liquor inside, and seal the jar with paper;seal with salt mud, and calcine with charcoal until the liquor has evaporated and blue smoke emerges; remove from the fire and allow to cool. Take only the woodpecker, grind it into a fine powder, then add the following ingredients): 2 liang of gypsum (calcined and ground), 1 liang of iron powder (boiled in half a sheng of slurry until completely dry, then ground into a fine powder),cinnabar 1 fen (ground, water-washed), aconite root 1 liang (fresh, roasted until cracked, with skin and pith removed), musk 1 fen (ground), borneol 1 qian (ground).

Instructions for Use

Take 1 qian per dose. First, have the patient take 2–3 sips of warm water. Mix a small amount of the medicine with one zhan of warm wine and drink it first, then swallow the remainder with the wine. After taking the dose, lie down and rest for a short while. Take one dose when a seizure is about to occur. Wait 1–2 days and take another dose; recovery will occur after no more than 10 doses. The dosage may be reduced for children.
