Commentary
Raw Astragalus assume the leading (chief) role, anchoring the herbal tea formula overall action. Codonopsis (Dang-shen) join as the supporting deputy. Sweet-neutral in property, it enters the Spleen, Lung meridians and works to tonify qi, strengthen the spleen and nourish the lung. Dried tangerine peel (Chen-pi) complements it, working to regulate qi, strengthen the spleen, dry dampness and dissolve phlegm. Finally, brown sugar (Hong-tang) functions as the harmonizing (envoy) ingredient; its role is to warm the middle, activate blood and harmonize the formula and coordinate the herbs. Taken together these herbs tonify qi, lifts and support, strengthen the spleen, nourish the stomach, in keeping with the qi deficiency and qi pattern.
