Commentary

Each of Moneywort holds the chief position in this formula, providing the main thrust of the formula. Patrinia (Bai-jiang-cao) stands in the deputy (minister) seat. Pungent, bitter-slightly cold in property, it enters the Stomach, Large Intestine, Liver meridians and works to clear heat, resolve dampness, drain pus and relieve pain. Artemisia capillaris (Yin-chen) reinforce this deputy action, working to clear damp-heat and relieve jaundice. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. The overall effect is to promote bile flow and expel gallstones, clear heat and detoxify, restoring balance within the chronic cholecystitis framework.
