Commentary
Yuzhu (Yu-zhu) stands as the primary (chief) herb; neutral and sweet in character, its action follows the Lung, Stomach meridians, working chiefly to nourish yin, moisten dryness and generate fluids. Sour jujube seeds (Suan-zao-ren) take the deputy (minister) role. Sweet, sour-neutral in property, it enters the Liver, Gallbladder, Heart meridians and works to nourish the heart, calm the spirit, astringe sweat and generate fluids. Without a separate harmonizing herb, the herbal tea formula balance is achieved through the mutual tempering of its active ingredients. Working as one, the formula nourish yin, reduce fire, calm the heart, soothe the spirit, thereby targeting the yin deficiency and yin pattern that underlies the complaint.
