Commentary
Taking fresh tangerine peel (Chen-pi) as the chief herb, the formula draws on its pungent, bitter flavor and warm property: it enters the Spleen, Lung meridians and works to regulate qi and resolve phlegm. Poria (Fu-ling) takes the deputy (minister) role; neutral and sweet, bland in character, it travels through the Heart, Lung, Spleen, Kidney meridians to drain dampness, strengthen the spleen and calm the spirit. Brown sugar (Hong-tang) plays the envoy role, unifying the formula, working to warm the middle, activate blood and harmonize the formula and unite the separate actions into one. The overall effect is to resolve phlegm and promote conception, restoring balance within the phlegm framework.
