Drug Formulation

1 he of Strychnos seeds, 1 da sheng of black sesame oil, a fistful of tangled hair (washed clean with lye water), 4 liang of yellow orpiment,1 liang of beeswax, 1 fangcun of crimson silk, pine resin the size of a peach pit, 2–7 cloves, 2–7 thorns from the head of a fermented rice cake (crushed), 7 pieces of salt in the shape of a seal (crushed), 1 jin of Bupleurum root (powdered), 1 jin of Aster tataricus, and 1 qian bi of donkey ear plugs.

Processing

First, heat the oil over charcoal until it boils 1–2 times; immediately add the tangled hair and boil until it is completely dissolved. Continue stirring with a comb until the mixture is ready, without stopping. Next, add the realgar; once it comes to a boil, remove from heat. When the boiling subsides, return to heat,then add Aconite seeds, followed by pine resin, then salt, cloves, and crimson silk, and finally Bupleurum and the other ingredients. Continue from dawn until dusk, observing the color as it turns black through a bamboo rod; first pinch a small amount between your fingers—if it crumbles easily, it is ready. Finally, add Donkey’s Ear Plug, let it sit overnight, and after it has cooled, reheat it over the fire before transferring it to a container.

Apply the mixture to the swollen area using a piece of old cloth.
