Drug Formulation

Chaihu (remove the root tip and reed-like base; peel off a small amount of the thin yellow skin; wipe clean; coarsely chop) 1 liang; Huangqin (select hollow roots; moisten thoroughly under running water; steam for half an incense stick’s duration; sun-dry; coarsely chop) 7 qian; Ren Shen (steamed over cooked rice until tender) 3 qian; Gan Cao (remove the root tip and tail; moisten with wine; roast until yellow; coarsely chop) 4 qian;Fresh Ginger (sliced) 6 qian, Pinellia (1 he; mix with half a he of ground white mustard seeds and 2 he of strong vinegar until cloudy and uniform; soak the Pinellia in this mixture, rinse several times, then rinse with water, sun-dry, and coarsely chop), Jujubes (split) 4 pieces,Asarum (select one root from the Northern Regions, with only one leaf; the stem is supple, the root slender, the tip straight and long; it is purple in color and pungent in taste; only those that feel fine and peppery when chewed are authentic; carefully sort out any with double leaves, cut off the seed at the top, soak in melon water overnight, sun-dry, and crush into small pieces) 3 qian.

Instructions for Use

Boil 3 sheng of water until reduced to 2 sheng; strain out the residue. Add Asarum, then boil again until reduced to 1.5 sheng; strain out the residue. Divide into 3 warm doses: one each for before the onset, during the onset, and after the onset.
