Drug Formulation

1 liang of Amber (stir-fried with vinegar, ground together with lampwick), 1 liang of Donkey-hide Gelatin (stir-fried into beads), 5 qian of Schisandra berries, 1 liang of Prepared Aconite (5 qian in summer), 5 qian of Cinnamon Bark (with coarse bark removed), 5 qian of Agarwood (unheated), 5 qian of Sichuan Lovage,Mulberry Parasite 1 liang, Angelica sinensis 1 liang, Cistanche 1 liang, Ginseng 1 liang, Dipsacus asper 1 liang, Prepared Rehmannia 1 liang, Myrrh (roasted) 1 liang, Wood Fragrance (unheated) 1 liang, Corydalis 1 liang, Frankincense (roasted) 1 liang, Ox Bile 3 qian, Cinnabar 1 liang (as a coating).

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. First, crush 8 liang of Motherwort, add 10 bowls of water, and boil until reduced by half. Strain out the residue, then simmer over low heat until it becomes a paste. Mix in the powdered herbs, add a small amount of aged honey, and pound the mixture over a thousand times. Divide the mixture into one hundred portions; each pill should weigh 1 qian 4 fen. Coat with cinnabar, dry in the shade, then sun-dry until completely dry, and encase in beeswax.

Instructions for Use

Take 1 pill per dose. For pain in the head and flanks, abdominal pain around the navel, vomiting, shortness of breath, chest tightness, phlegm-induced wheezing, and inability to eat or drink, mix a small amount of ginger juice with wine and dissolve the pill in it before taking; for dysentery of various colors, as well as red or white vaginal discharge, cold menstrual blood, menorrhagia, and bleeding due to miscarriage or retained products of conception, decoct fresh ginger and mugwort leaves (roasted until black) in wine until it boils several times, then mix with the decoction and take; for unstoppable diarrhea, take with a drink of aged rice water;For dysuria and various types of urinary disorders, take with a decoction of Tongcao and Lampwick; for blood-induced fainting with loss of consciousness, administer half a pill mixed with a child’s urine; after regaining consciousness, take 1–2 pills with Angelica Decoction; for heat above and cold below, take with Ginseng Decoction; for generalized edema and fluid retention, take with Red Adzuki Bean Decoction;For postpartum “two toxins,” typhoid fever, or stroke with opisthotonos, take Ephedra Decoction mixed with a beverage and induce sweating under blankets; for amenorrhea, or menstruation intermixed with five-colored discharge, frequent and unceasing flow, loss of appetite, emaciation with a red face, parched lips, alternating chills and fever, and frequent pain in the limbs,heat in the palms, soles, and chest, black (dry) blood spots, red swelling with wandering pain, blood-wind disorders, and exhaustion—all treated by taking the formula mixed with a small amount of ginger juice in a child’s urine; during labor, take 1 pill with wine to facilitate delivery; for regular use, mix with a child’s urine and an equal part wine to prevent nausea; in the final month of pregnancy, take one dose daily until delivery to alleviate pain, or take for up to 10 days to double one’s appetite.
