Drug Formulation

2 liang of Wuzhi Ointment, 1 jin of purified asphalt, half a jin of purified frankincense, 1 liang of powdered frankincense, 1 liang of myrrh, 2 qian of mercury oxide, 1 liang of beeswax, 2 qian of powdered dragon’s blood, 1 qian of powdered musk, 1 liang of powdered benzoin, 1 liang of orpiment, and 2 liang of powdered malachite (extremely fine).

Processing

First, prepare the Five-Branch Paste (using 5 sheng each of peach branches, willow branches, locust branches, elm branches, mulberry twigs, and goji bark; chop them finely; add one dan of running water; boil together until reduced to 5 fen; strain out the residue; add 4 liang of ground Angelica sinensis; simmer over low heat until it forms a paste; it is ready when a drop in water does not disperse). Then, add Chuanxiong and Angelica dahurica to oil and simmer together(use 4 liang of oil in spring and summer; 6 liang in autumn and winter). When the oil is ready, remove the herbs; add asphalt, yellow incense, and yellow wax, and melt them together. Next, add the Five-Branch Paste and stir with a locust branch over 200 times. Add frankincense, myrrh, dragon’s blood, mercury oxide, benzoin, and yellow丹, and stir another 200 times.then add musk and melon green, and stir another 300 times, until the mixture floats when a drop of water is added to the basin; pour the mixture into a basin of water; the floating portion should resemble a green lotus leaf; if it appears the color of agarwood, boil it again; pull and stretch it over 200 times, shape it into chunks the size of a chicken’s egg, soak it in the basin of water overnight, remove and drain thoroughly, place it on a paper tray, and store in a warm place in winter and a cool place in summer.

Instructions for Use

When applying, use crimson cotton cloth cut to the size of the sore, spread the mixture with saliva, and apply it without leaving any openings; avoid exposure to fire. If applying to a brain abscess or a suppurating back ulcer, first wash the affected area with a decoction of locust tree branches and green onion whites, then apply the mixture. Change the dressing every 3–5 days.

Note

When decocting this medicine, do not use iron utensils.
