E-E-Dan,Yin E. This condition arises from a deficiency of kidney yin, causing fire to fail to be contained below and instead rise upward. Since the throat is narrow, the fire cannot be directly discharged, thus forming a mass resembling a moth—though it is not actually a moth. The pain is mild in the morning, severe in the afternoon, and reaches its peak at dusk. Hot liquids alleviate the pain, while cold ones exacerbate it. In severe cases, not even a drop of water can pass through the throat.
