Processing

First, crush the Coptis and soak it in a bowl; let it sit for two or three days in cold weather, or one day in hot weather. Strain the Coptis soaking liquid through a sieve to obtain about half a tea clock of clear liquid. Next, finely crush the remaining three ingredients, mix them with the Coptis liquid in a mortar, and grind them together as described for the previous formula, ensuring the mixture is extremely fine. Once ground, transfer the mixture—including the liquid—to a large dish.During the day, place it in a shaded area to air-dry; at night, leave it exposed to the open air. In winter, gentle sun exposure is also acceptable. If there is wind or dust, cover it with thin paper. Once dry, store it in an airtight bottle.
