Drug Formulation

Fennel Seeds (imported varieties are best) 2 liang, Aconite Root (roasted until cracked, with skin and pith removed) 2 liang, Morinda Root (with core removed) 2 liang, Sichuan Pepper (with seeds and closed tips removed, stir-fried until sweating) 2 liang, Achyranthes Root (soaked in wine overnight, then baked) 2 liang,Cistanche (soaked in wine until soft, finely chopped, and baked) 2 liang, Rock Salt (ground) 2 liang.

Processing

Grind all the herbs except the rock salt into a fine powder, mix thoroughly, and blend evenly. Boil 2–3 pairs of sheep or pig kidneys until very tender, remove the tendons and membranes, and finely chop. Mash the kidneys until smooth, mix with the herbal powder, and pound in a mortar and pestle until thoroughly blended and well-cooked. Form into pills the size of a Paulownia seed.
