Drug Formulation

7 blister beetles (remove heads, legs, and wings; stir-fry with glutinous rice until the mixture turns a pale yellowish-black; grind the beetles into a powder for later use),1 chicken egg (drill a hole in it, stir well with a silver hairpin, add the ground blister beetle powder, stir again until uniform, use the eggshell to seal the hole, secure with cotton paper, then wrap in seven layers of coarse paper and soak thoroughly in water until ready for use), 4 liang of Smilax glabra (select small, flat pieces; long, large ones are called “milk shoulder” and are toxic, so do not use them), and half a jin of pork from a pig raised on vegetables (simmer to make a broth for later use).

Instructions for Use

At the fifth watch, roast the medicated egg over a fire of coarse rice husks until cooked through, and eat it while still hot, washing it down with the previously prepared Tufuling meat broth.After 3 days, if there is distension and pain in the lower abdomen, administer Yiyuan Powder to induce a bowel movement; if the bowel has not yet moved, drink hot water to stimulate it. The root of the toxin will be expelled in the urine, appearing round like an eye and resembling rotten flesh. Once the root is expelled, the scrofula will resolve on its own—this method is highly effective. Alternatively, use herbs such as Akebia, talc, or indigo powder to expel it; indigo powder is particularly effective at neutralizing the toxin of the spotted beetle.
