Processing

Boil 1.5 jin of sesame oil until it turns black and charred, strain out the residue, then return it to the pot and boil again until a drop of water forms a bead. Pour it into a porcelain container and weigh exactly 2 jin of cooked oil. Add 2 liang of rosin, 2 liang of beeswax, and 2 liang of tung oil. If the mixture is too soft, add a small amount of Hangzhou starch. Boil until it reaches a medium consistency—neither too soft nor too hard. Once it has cooled to lukewarm, add the following ingredients:Frankincense, myrrh, catechu, dragon’s blood, asafoetida, musk, and mercuric oxide—grind these into a fine powder and slowly mix them into the oil until the mixture no longer sticks to your hands. Bury the mixture in the ground for three days to remove its fiery toxicity; then store it in a porcelain container for use as needed.
