Drug Formulation

Half a jin of smilax seeds (shelled), half a jin of black castor seeds (crushed), and half a jin of raw rhubarb.

From *Liangpeng Huiji*, Volume 5.

Processing

Soak the ingredients in 4 jin and a half of oil for 5 days in spring, 3 days in summer, 7 days in fall, and 10 days in winter. Fry until charred black, then strain out the residue. Weigh the net oil at 1 jin, add half a jin of sifted orpiment, and simmer over heat until a drop of the mixture forms a bead when placed in water. Remove from heat when it reaches the desired consistency, let cool until lukewarm, then add 1 liang of asafoetida powder and 1 qian of musk powder. Stir well and store in a jar.

Instructions for Use

To use, simmer with water until dissolved, spread on a fine blue cloth, and apply as a poultice until completely absorbed.
