Processing

Select stalactites from Shaozhou; regardless of thickness, those with a clear, bright, and lustrous color are suitable for refinement. Only those of yellow or reddish hues are unsuitable. There is no limit to the quantity to be refined. Place the stalactites in a gold or silver vessel, then fill a large cauldron with water, submerge the vessel in the water, and boil it, maintaining a gentle simmer with small bubbles like fish eyes. Top up the water as it evaporates. If the stalactite is thin, it will be ready in three days and three nights; if it is coarse, thick, and tubular, it will take seven days and seven nights. Wait until the stalactite turns yellowish-white, indicating it is ready. If you suspect it is still raw, boil it further; ten full days is optimal. Once boiling is complete, remove it into a gold or silver bowl. Discard the yellow, turbid water left in the cauldron; do not allow anyone to drink it, as doing so will damage the throat, injure the liver and lungs, cause headaches, and result in uncontrollable diarrhea.Should anyone experience adverse effects, eating pork will cure the condition. After discarding this yellow water, add fresh water and boil again as before. After about half a day, remove it; if the water remains clear and does not change color, stop the process—the milk is now non-toxic. Immediately transfer it to a porcelain bowl and grind it with a jade pestle while adding water. The bowl and pestle must be enclosed in a white silk bag with a slightly elongated opening, allowing the pestle to rotate freely and ensuring unobstructed movement up and down. Each day, add water and stir until evenly mixed, taking care not to let the mixture adhere to the pestle. Then seal the silk bag and mark it with a personal symbol; do not allow anyone to open it. This serves two purposes: first, to prevent even the slightest dust from entering, and second, to prevent anyone from stealing and consuming it.If the mixture feels dry and涩, it means the water has evaporated; add more water immediately, maintaining a consistency similar to thin rice water. The finer particles will float on top, while the coarser ones will sink to the bottom. Continue grinding around all four sides of the hammer; if this step is skipped, the mixture will be uneven in texture. Therefore, once or twice a day, stir and scrape the mixture thoroughly to ensure uniformity, taking care not to let it stick to the hammer. This will ensure a uniform, fully processed mixture free of coarse or fine particles.Grind for 4–5 days until it resembles milk. Scrape and examine it; if it looks like the white, greasy film on fish as described in books, it is ready. When it becomes naturally bright white, wash it with water; if it does not wash away, it is fully processed. If it washes away with the water, it is not yet ready and must be ground further until it no longer washes away. Once fully processed, strain it and dry it in the sun.
