Processing

Place the herbs in a new earthenware jar, soak them in clean water, and expose them to sunlight by day and moonlight by night for 49 days. If there are days of wind, rain, or overcast skies, cover the jar with a lid; the total exposure time must be made up for.Remove the mixture, strain out the residue, and decoct it in a copper pot, stirring with locust and willow twigs until it thickens to a paste-like consistency. Then add the following ingredients: 5 qian of real realgar, blue calcined stone (calcined 7 times with children’s urine), frankincense (oil removed), myrrh (roasted), bear bile (baked),dragon bone (calcined), black alum, dragon’s blood, stone swallow (calcined seven times with vinegar), cuttlefish bone (wrapped in paper and baked), zinc oxide (calcined seven times with children’s urine), and indigo powder—each 5 fen; dried alum and catechu—each 1 qian; mercury oxide and orpiment (water-floated)—each 3 fen; moonstone—7 fen; and charred mulberry twigs—3 qian.Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix thoroughly into the ointment prepared earlier, and shape into small cakes the size of a fingertip. Expose them to the sun and dew for 7 days and nights; place them on the ground, cover with a earthenware basin, and turn them once a day. After 7 days, remove them and place them in a well-ventilated area to air-dry. Store in an earthenware jar; they will be ready for use after 3 months. When using, grind into an extremely fine powder. Take 2 fen from each cake and add the following seven ingredients: borneol, pearl, and coral (water-floated), each 4 fen; musk, 2 fen; ox bile, 2 fen; mercury oxide, 1 li; and moonstone, 2 fen. Grind into a fine powder, mix thoroughly, and store tightly in a small bottle, sealing the opening to prevent air from escaping.
