Drug Formulation

1 jin of transparent sulfur, 1 liang of mercury oxide.

Source

Formula by Qian Guanwen, cited in Volume 1 of *Bai Yi*.

Processing

First, grind the sulfur to a very fine powder. From the 1 jin of sulfur, take 1 liang of the finely ground sulfur and mix it with 1 liang of mercuric oxide; grind them together for about one shichen, then set this mixture aside in a separate container;First, take 10 jin of genuine clam powder and spread it evenly over a new tile, filling it to the rim. Next, place a silver bowl—large enough to hold at least 1 jin of sulfur powder—in the center of the tile. Use the clam powder to tightly form a basin around the bowl on all sides; it is essential that it be packed firmly; Then gently remove the bowl. Use a large spoon to scoop 15 liang of the finely ground sulfur powder into the basin. Next, add 2 liang of the mixture of mercury oxide and sulfur powder to cover the top, pressing it down with a spoon to make it slightly compact;Apply 5 jin of steady fire around the edges of the tile to calcine it. Wait until the sulfur melts into a liquid that seeps through to the bottom, at which point the two vapors—sulfur and mercury oxide—will have fused. Immediately cover the medicinal liquid with a large bowlful of fine oyster shell powder. Let the residual heat smolder overnight until the fire dies down completely. When retrieved, the mixture will have solidified into a single piece. Brush off all the oyster shell powder, grind it thoroughly until extremely fine, and form it into pills the size of a tung tree seed using wheat flour paste.
