Drug Formulation

Mountain Arrowhead (commonly known as “Golden Lantern.” Its flowers resemble lanterns, are white in color with black spots, and bear three-sided seeds; it blooms in the second month, bears fruit in the third month, and is dug up in early April as soon as the shoots wither; if delayed, the shoots rot and the plant will not survive.It closely resembles the toxic “Old Crow Garlic,” but while the garlic is hairless, the water caltrop is covered in hairs that wrap around its segments. Processing

On the Dragon Boat Festival, the Seventh Night of the Seventh Month, and the Double Ninth Festival, grind each of the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix them together several hundred times until thoroughly blended, then sift through a fine sieve 1–2 times. Next, mix with a thick glutinous rice decoction and pound in a wooden mortar several thousand times until the mixture becomes extremely smooth and lustrous. Form into pills weighing 1 qian each.

Instructions for Use

Take one tablet per dose. For severe cases, take consecutive doses; it is harmless to have 1–2 bowel movements, after which one should replenish with warm congee. It may be taken internally or applied externally. For all types of toxins—including food and medicinal poisons, witchcraft poisons, miasma, harmful bacteria, pufferfish, and toxins from consuming dead, run-down, or emaciated cattle and horses—grind the tablets with cold water and take orally;For southern sorcery-induced poisons or miasma-related illnesses that cause harm, as soon as one feels unwell, grind and take one ingot; vomiting or diarrhea will follow, and recovery will be immediate. For severe swelling caused by various forms of sorcery, take it with barley sprout decoction; for boils, abscesses, and back sores.For mouth sores, “heavenly snake head” sores, and various malignant boils such as those of unknown origin, as well as all types of hives and red swellings that have not yet ruptured, and hemorrhoids, grind the pill with alcohol free of ash and take it orally; then mix it with cool water and apply it to the affected area several times a day and night—the itching will subside immediately.For lesions that have already ulcerated and are discharging pus and blood, reduce the dosage proportionally; for Yin and Yang toxins, typhoid fever with chest oppression, delirium and incoherent speech, chest and diaphragm congestion, cases where pathogenic toxins have not yet manifested but purgation is indicated, as well as epidemic throat obstruction and croup, grind the powder with cool water and small-leaved mint and take orally;for consumptive tuberculosis, grind with sandalwood decoction and take orally; for heart pain and various qi disorders, grind with light wine or light ginger decoction and take orally; for chronic or acute malaria, just before an attack, grind with a decoction of peach tree branches boiled in east-flowing water and take orally; for dysentery with red or white stools, diarrhea, acute abdominal pain, cholera, intestinal colic, and various phlegm-related conditions, grind with peppermint decoction and take orally;For acute epileptic disorders in men and women—including screaming, running about in confusion, possession by spirits, ghost pregnancies, and ghostly qi; madness and loss of reason; epilepsy such as “goat” or “pig” epilepsy; stroke; qi collapse; facial paralysis; locked jaw; slurred speech; muscle spasms; swollen joints; pain in the hands, feet, waist, legs, and throughout the body; difficulty walking; and all forms of epilepsy—grind the powder with warm wine and administer it;For those who have died by hanging or drowning but whose chest remains warm, or for those who died of fright or were bewitched by spirits—provided less than a night has passed since death—administer the mixture ground with cold water; for chronic or recent headaches, or pain in the temples, grind mint leaves with wine until pulpy and apply the paste to the temples using a piece of paper; for toothaches, apply the mixture ground with wine to the affected area or hold a small amount in the mouth for a long time before swallowing;For acute and chronic convulsions in children, the “Five Wasting Diseases” and “Five Dysentery Conditions,” spleen disorders with jaundice and swelling, hives, sores, and tumors, as well as locked jaws, grind peppermint leaves with honey water and administer orally or apply topically; adjust the dosage according to the child’s size, with one pill divided into 2–3 doses;For women and girls with blocked menstruation, take it with a decoction of safflower; for blows, falls, and injuries, grind roasted pine knots with light wine and take orally; for scalds and burns, grind with running water and apply topically; for bites from venomous insects or rabid dogs, grind with cold water and apply topically, or grind with light wine and take orally.
