Chinese Name : 伏火四神丹

Drug Formulation

Cinnabar 2 liang, realgar 2 liang, orpiment 2 liang, sulfur 2 liang.

Source

From *Ji Feng*, Volume 13.

Processing

Crush the four ingredients with a mallet. Take a sheet of sturdy paper made from mulberry bark—thick enough to hold its shape—and coat both sides three times with a thick layer of well-ground pine soot ink until it has a glossy black sheen. Dry it in the sun; this is called “Kunlun paper,” which is used to wrap the aforementioned medicine. In a clean room, dig a pit about 4 inches deep, with the width and height on all four sides each 2 inches wider than the corners of the medicine package;Place a layer of fine powder made from new roof tiles (tiles that have never been exposed to rain; grind them together to obtain a fine powder) in the pit, about 2 inches deep. Place the corners of the medicine mixture inside, then cover them with another 2 inches of tile powder, raising the surface slightly above ground level so that it resembles a turtle’s back;Calcine 7–8 jin of charcoal on the stove top, gradually adding more charcoal—using about 100 jin in total—and maintaining a steady fire. When the medicine begins to make a sound, gradually reduce the charcoal until the sound ceases and the glow recedes into the substance; only then should you stop the fire and remove the remaining charcoal;Cover with a large load of fresh yellow earth and let it sit for two fú. Remove the medicine bundle and peel off the paper; use a palm-fiber brush to wash it in a basin of clean water until all frost and mist are removed. Keep it away from sunlight morning and night for three nights, then grind it into an extremely fine powder. Form it into pills with glutinous rice paste, each about the size of a chick’s head, and air-dry them.
