Drug Formulation

75 pieces of gold leaf, 1.5 liang of mercury, 1 liang of Polygala (with the core removed), 3 fen of Acorus, 3 fen of Uncaria, 3 fen of Gentiana (with the root tip removed), 3 fen of dragon’s teeth, 3 fen of ginseng (with the root tip removed), 3 fen of red Poria, 1 fen of indigo powder, 3 cicadas (with wings and legs removed), 1 fen of musk,1 pair of tiger eyes (lightly roasted), 1 fen of ox bile, 2 fen of licorice (roasted until slightly reddish, then coarsely chopped), 4 liang of clarified butter, and 3 jin of honey.

Processing

Grind the above ingredients together with mercury and gold leaf into a paste. Separately, grind the four ingredients—musk, tiger’s eyes, ox bile, and indigo powder—into a fine powder. Pound and sift the remaining herbs into a powder. Place them in a silver pot with 2 sheng of water,simmer over low heat until reduced to half a sheng. Filter through fresh cotton to remove the dregs, then return the liquid to the pot. Add the clarified butter, honey, gold paste, and the ground ingredients, and simmer over low heat, stirring constantly with a willow whisk until it reaches the consistency of thick syrup. Transfer to a porcelain container.

Instructions for Use

For each dose, take an amount about the size of two soybeans, mix with warm water, and administer 3–4 times a day.
