Processing

First, slice the Croton seeds and all other herbs listed above into thin pieces; grind the Frankincense and all other herbs listed below into a fine powder. Place 2 jin of sesame oil in a porcelain jar, add the Croton seeds and the other herbs listed above, and let them steep, for 5 days in spring, 3 days in summer, 7 days in autumn, and 10 days in winter. After the soaking period, remove the herbs and place them in a copper pot along with the locust and willow branches. Simmer over alternating low and high heat until the locust and willow branches turn black. Strain out the herbal residue through fine silk, then add the orpiment to the oil and simmer together. Stir frequently with a locust branch 1 chi long (thicker than a tendon). When the color of the oil appears nearly ready, and the oil has become a paste—when a drop of water forms a bead the size of a coin—only then add the powdered herbs starting with frankincense. Stir even more frequently for a long time, until, when the mixture is lifted, three, five, or seven fine threads, each one chi long, form without breaking. Then transfer it into 2–3 small porcelain jars, bury them in the earth to absorb the energy of the Five Elements for over a month before use.
