Drug Formulation

10 liang of processed calamine, 3 liang of Coptis, 3 liang of Phellodendron, 3 liang of mint, 1 liang of licorice,2 liang of Parkia (coarsely crush the above five ingredients, decoct in several bowls of water until fully cooked, strain out the residue, and transfer to a mortar; finely grind the calcedony, place it in a silver crucible, calcine over a fire until deep red, pour it into the decoction and grind immediately, sift to obtain a pure powder for use), 1 liang of mercury,1 qian of black lead (combine the above two ingredients into a single block), 1 qian of white borax, 5 fen of realgar, 1 liang of table salt (boiled in plain water, then stir-fried until dry), 1 liang of calcined white alum, 2 qian of soapstone alum, 7 qian 5 fen of fire-calcined alum(extracted with radish juice. Combine the above 8 ingredients in one place, place them in a Yangcheng jar, seal it tightly with salt mud until dry, and heat it until one stick of official incense burns out; allow to cool before removing for use).

Processing

Grind the previously prepared calamine into a fine powder; place 5 liang of it at the bottom of the Yangcheng jar. Next, grind the 7 qian 5 fen of realgar into a fine powder as well; place another 5 liang of calamine on top of it, cover securely, and seal tightly. Burn one stick of official incense; once cooled and set, remove to eliminate the fire toxicity. Grind the mixture into an extremely fine powder and sift it through a sieve.

Instructions for Use

To treat corneal opacities, add 5 qian of white borax, 1 qian 5 fen of arsenic trioxide, and 1 qian 5 fen of potassium nitrate; prepare as described above. This formula is called “Rolling Curtain Powder.” To treat blurred vision, add borneol; this formula is called “Sunlight Powder.”
