Drug Formulation

4 liang of mugwort; Angelica sinensis roots, Angelica dahurica, Achyranthes bidentata, Astragalus membranaceus,Trichosanthes seed, soapberry thorns, castor bean, Fangfeng, white mulberry bark, white silkworm pupae, Sichuan Dipsacus, Corydalis, Cinnamomum cassia (without bark), Coptis, Aquilaria, Du Huo, red peony root, Sichuan lovage, Asarum, Pinellia, 30 seeds of croton (without shells), Platycodon root 5 qian, Curcuma zedoaria 5 qian,Peony Bark 5 qian, White Fresh Bark 5 qian, Dogspine 5 qian, Tianma 5 qian,Vitex fruit 5 qian, Elderberry 5 qian, Cnidium 5 qian, Wood Fragrance 5 qian, Wilfordia 5 qian, Bletilla 5 qian, White Smilax 5 qian, Eucommia 5 qian, Bone-mending Herb 5 qian, Notopterygium 5 qian, Smilax glabra 5 qian, Broken Paper 5 qian, Leulou 5 qian,5 qian of Gardenia bark, 5 qian of Acanthopanax bark, 5 qian of Schizonepeta, branches of Sophora japonica and Salix (those facing south), peach twigs (those facing northeast), and 5 qian of Coix seed (all of the above ingredients should be coarsely chopped, soaked in sesame oil for 5 days in spring, 3 days in summer, 7 days in fall, and 10 days in winter;then gently heat the mixture in a cauldron over low heat; do not use sudden, intense heat. Continue this for 3 days and 3 nights; next, simmer over alternating low and medium heat until boiling, stirring with locust and willow branches until the Angelica dahurica turns yellow), 4 liang of beeswax, 5 jin of colophony, 2.5 jin of citral,1 large bowl of ginger juice, 1 large bowl of scallion juice (including roots), 1 large bowl of aged rice vinegar, and 3 jin of sesame oil (to be used in four batches; first, melt the colophony and frangipani in a pot, strain out the residue, then add 1 bowl of scallion juice, 1 bowl of ginger juice, and 1 bowl of aged rice vinegar, along with the medicinal oil from the 50 ingredients—to be used in four batches;Use more in spring, autumn, and winter; use less in summer—adjust as appropriate), Aquilaria agallocha, Pentasilium, natural copper (cleaned with vinegar 7 times until white), Unnamed Herb, realgar (pure and clear) 5 qian,Frankincense 1 liang; Myrrh, Orpiment (flamed), Whole Scorpion, Dragon’s Blood, Amber, and Musk—each 3 qian and a half; Dew-soaked Beehive (burned to ash), Tiger Bone (roasted in vinegar until yellow), Pangolin Scale (calcined until charred yellow), and Decayed Turtle Plastron (roasted in vinegar until yellow)—5 qian.

Processing

Grind the above 16 ingredients into a fine powder. Melt them together with the previous ingredients in a pot over low heat, stirring constantly. Once the pine resin and costus root are evenly distributed, add the powdered ingredients (excluding musk and orpiment), then add frankincense and myrrh, and stir vigorously until uniform. Test the consistency by dripping a small amount into water; once the desired consistency is achieved, pour the mixture into water and knead by hand over a hundred times. Transfer to a porcelain container to allow the heat to dissipate; let stand for 3 days before use.
