Chinese Name : 太清四扇丹

Drug Formulation

Cinnabar 4 liang (crushed to the size of sesame seeds; on the Shangsi Festival, collect 20 liang of peach blossoms; add 1 jin of genuine honey; place all together in a silver vessel and simmer in a double boiler until the first day of the fifth lunar month; rinse thoroughly with fresh well water; then grind the cinnabar),4 liang of Qilin Jie (select genuine quality; add to the cinnabar on the 2nd day of the 5th month and grind together), 4 liang of Myrrh (transparent variety; add to the cinnabar on the 3rd day of the 5th month and grind together), 4 liang of Musk (whole; add to the cinnabar on the 4th day of the 5th month and grind together).

Processing

For the above formula, first take 1 liang of Shangdang ginseng and 1 fen of licorice, both finely chopped. On May 1, before sunrise, collect 1 sheng of dew. Soak them together with 3 liang of genuine Liu. By the Dragon Boat Festival, boil the mixture until the liquid is reduced by half, then strain out the residue. Add wheat flour to make a paste, mix with the herbs, and form into pills slightly firm to the touch, each the size of a Chinese toon fruit.

Effective against all types of noxious qi and malaria; also treats pain in women caused by blood and qi surging to the heart.

Instructions for Use

Take one pill or half a pill with 2 he of warm water infused with agarwood. In years of epidemic, the entire family should observe strict abstinence and purity; upon rising at dawn, face east and take one pill each with well water—this will ensure they remain free from the epidemic. Men should take it with ginger wine; women should take it with a decoction of stir-fried ginger and vinegar. For intermittent malaria, take one pill or a Hua pill with dried tea, adjusting the dose according to the severity of the illness.
