Drug Formulation

Processed Cyperus rhizome 3 liang, Western Notopterygium root 3 liang, Angelica sinensis (whole) 3 liang, Sichuan Dipsacus root (flesh) 3 liang, Raw Polygala root (flesh) 2 liang, Mingyao Huang 1 liang, White alum 1 liang, Guangdong Earthworm (thoroughly cleaned of mud and grime, stir-fried until loose but not burnt) 6 qian, Pangolin scales (thoroughly fried) 5 qian, Saffron 5 qian, High-quality Dragon’s Blood 5 qian,5 qian of Duck-Bill Bile Alum, 8 qian of Frankincense (oil-free and purified), 8 qian of Myrrh (oil-free and purified), 2 qian of Genuine Mercury Oxide (purified), 3 qian of Western Cow Bezoar, 3 qian of Large Plum-Blossom Borneol, and 3 qian of Dangmen Musk.

Processing

Grind each of the above ingredients into a fine powder and mix thoroughly. Separately, take 2 liang 6 qian of genuine toad venom, dissolve it in Fen wine, and pound it together with the powder to form pills the size of small mung beans; coat them with cinnabar.

Instructions for Use

For minor cases, take about one fen per dose; for severe cases, take 1 qian to 1 qian 5 fen. If the condition presents with initial aching pain and firm swelling, and the patient is able to drink alcohol, swallow the pills with warm yellow wine.For those unable to drink alcohol, take the pills with a decoction of Angelica sinensis and Wood Fragrance. Swallow the pills whole; do not chew them. If swelling and pain are severe and pus is about to form, this formula may still be taken, but the dose should be slightly reduced; even after pus has formed, if the surrounding tissue remains firm, it may still be taken until the firm swelling is completely resolved.

Note

Avoid this formula for carbuncles on the head or face.
