Commentary
Taking Astragalus (Huang-qi) as the leading herb, the formula draws on its sweet flavor and slightly warm property: its action follows the Spleen, Lung meridians and works to tonify qi, raise yang, secure the exterior and promote the discharge of pus. Almonds (Xing-ren) serve as the deputy herb; warm and bitter in character, it travels through the Lung, Large Intestine meridians to descend lung qi and relieve cough and wheezing. Walnut kernels (He-tao-ren) add further support, working to tonify the kidney, warm the lung and moisten the intestines. No dedicated envoy herb appears in this recipe, the actions being balanced among the active ingredients themselves. In sum, the prescription nourish the lungs and kidneys, relieve coughing and wheezing, aimed squarely at the qi deficiency and qi pattern rather than at isolated symptoms.
