Drug Formulation

7 sections of greater thistle root (each 1 cun long; also known as “thorn mustard”), 1 liang of white alum (finely ground), and 7 dou of musk.

Processing

Take one large Trichosanthes fruit that has not come into contact with soil; cut off the top without removing the pulp. Place the Great Thistle roots, white alum, and musk inside. Stir the contents seven times with a comb, then replace the top. Mix one he with salt and soil to form a paste, seal the container tightly, and let it dry in the shade. Calcine it over a charcoal fire,until it turns completely red, then let it cool completely. Remove the clay, grind it into a fine powder, take half to make a powder, and use the other half to form pills the size of a Paulownia seed with glutinous rice porridge.

Instructions for Use

Each day on an empty stomach, decoct Great Thistle shoots to make a broth and mix in half a qian of the powder. At noon and before bedtime, decoct Great Thistle shoots again and take 10 pills with the resulting wine. Symptoms will subside after 2–3 days of treatment. It is essential to consume 3–5 Trichosanthes fruits to permanently eliminate the root cause.
