Chinese Name : 神仙灵砂丹

Drug Formulation

4 liang of mercury, 1.5 liang of sulfur.

Source

*Shengji Zonglu*, Volume 200.

Processing

First, melt the sulfur; as soon as it melts, add the mercury. Stir with an iron spoon until it forms blue cinnabar granules. Weigh out exactly 4 liang; if it is heavier, stir again until all traces of yellow are removed. Take one calcined medicine box with a slightly smaller opening than the granules; place the blue cinnabar inside. Take a new tea cup, with a wide, flat, clean, and thick bottom, and fill it with about 7 fen of freshly drawn water. Place the bowl on top of the box containing the sand. Mix fine red cinnabar powder with water to form a paste, and use it to seal the box’s seams tightly. Place the box over a strong, steady fire and gently fan the flames. As the water in the bowl evaporates, replenish it immediately to maintain a constant level. Continue for about half a day until the fire cools naturally.Remove the cup’s base to reveal a clump of spiritual sand. Tap it to determine the quantity; any remaining material should be heated again as before. Once the sand is formed, place it in a silk bag, boil it in water for 3–5 boils, or soak it for half a day, then strain, dry, and grind it finely into a powder. Mix with a paste made from boiled Pinellia tuber to form pills the size of a Paulownia seed.
