Drug Formulation

Angelica sinensis (washed with wine) 2 liang, Moutan bark (washed with water, sun-dried, kept away from fire) 2 liang, Qi-ai (boiled in vinegar) 2 liang, Corydalis (mixed with wine, stir-fried until dry) 2 liang, Chuanxiong 2 liang, Motherwort (upper half of the stem, soaked in a child’s urine, sun-dried) 2 liang,Artemisia annua 2 liang, Baiwei (washed, mixed with human milk) 2 liang, Ginseng 2 liang, Red Ocher (calcined; water-washed is also acceptable) 2 liang, Poria cocos 2 liang, Chuan Gaoben (washed) 2 liang, Atractylodes macrocephala (stir-fried with earth) 2 liang, Raw Rehmannia (washed with wine, boiled without using iron utensils) 4 liang, Softshell Turtle Carapace (roasted with vinegar) 4 liang,Cyperus rhizome 4 liang (soaked in vinegar, wine, salt, and children’s urine, 1 liang each), Cinnamomum cassia bark 1 liang 2 qian, Myrrh (oil removed) 1 liang 2 qian, Licorice root (stir-fried with wine) 1 liang 2 qian, Schisandra chinensis (stem removed, roasted) 1 liang, Agarwood 6 qian.

Processing

Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take one fresh, first-born male fetal placenta (Zi He Che), soak it in running water for half a day, wash it thoroughly, and place it in a black lead pot. Then place 4 liang of Phellodendron bark beneath the placenta, add 2 jin of white rice wine,2 bowls of clear water, and fill the lead jar to the brim. Seal the opening with molten lead. Place the lead jar inside an iron pot filled with water and simmer for two days and nights. Remove the contents, mash them thoroughly, mix them into the herbal mixture, stir well, and dry in the sun. Grind the mixture into a fine powder, then mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a marble, each weighing 3 qian and 5 fen.Coat with water-floated cinnabar, then encase with beeswax, and store according to the method for wax pills.

Instructions for Use

For women in labor, take 1 pill at a time, dissolved in rice water; after delivery, take 1 pill at a time, washed down with a child’s urine or good wine; postpartum, take 1 pill at a time; after menstruation, take 1 pill at a time, washed down with Chuanxiong Danggui Decoction; for those prone to miscarriage, when fetal movement indicates impending labor, take 1 pill at a time, washed down with Bai Gun Decoction, and take 2–3 pills monthly as a preventive measure;For postpartum hemorrhage, take 1 pill with a child’s urine or good wine; for postpartum syncope, take 1 pill with Chuanxiong Danggui Decoction; for postpartum convulsions, take 1 pill with Fangfeng Decoction; for postpartum pelvic pain, take 1 pill with Hawthorn and Brown Sugar Decoction; for retained placenta, take 1 pill with a decoction of dried ginger (roasted until black); for postpartum weakness, take 1 pill daily with Chuanxiong Danggui Decoction.For all postpartum conditions, add fine wine or a child’s urine when administering the medicine.
