Massage Body Positions and Massage Mediums

Massage body positions: There are four types, including sitting position, prone position, lateral position, and supine position.

Massage medium: Also known as “transmitter,” it refers to the lubricant applied to the patient’s skin. Examples include ginger, (scallion) water, talcum powder, medicinal liquor, plain water, musk rheumatism oil, Shexiang Shuhuoling, safflower oil, turpentine oil, Huoluo oil, etc. Different mediums are selected according to different conditions. For example, ginger and scallion water are used for deficiency-cold syndromes; talcum powder is used when the skin feels sticky due to sweating; white liquor or plain water is used for persistent heat syndromes; musk rheumatism oil is used for wind-cold-dampness arthralgia; and Shexiang Shuhuoling is used for blood stasis, swelling, and pain caused by traumatic injuries.

  1. Great overview! I’ve always used prone and supine positions, but never tried the lateral one for massage. Also, ginger as a medium sounds intriguing—anyone here tried it? Does it actually warm up the muscles more than regular oil?
