Instructions for Use

For each use, take 2 dou of water and half a liang of the herbal mixture. Simmer for 5–7 boils, strain out the residue, and pour into a basin. Inhale the steam over the feet until circulation is restored, then use the liquid to wash the hands. If the liquid cools, it may be reheated. After bathing, it is best to wear socks while lying down; a brief bath is particularly beneficial. If you wish to sit in the decoction, use 5 dou of water and 1 liang and a half of the powdered herbs; boil for more than 10 boils. Once the water is warm enough to touch, you may sit in it; if it cools, reheat it. It is even more effective to pour the water over the area around the Kidney Shu acupoints with your hands. After the bath, go to bed immediately and avoid drafts; repeat every 5–7 days. The efficacy need not be elaborated upon; if you wake to find a slight sweat on your lower back and knees, this is particularly remarkable. Be sure to eat a hearty meal before taking the bath.
