Processing

In a new iron cauldron, melt the lead until it becomes liquid. Place 2 qian of powdered white alum into a small bamboo tube and suspend it directly beneath the center of the cauldron. Once the mixture has come to a steady boil, use a small bamboo tube to pour mercury into the cauldron, directing it onto the white alum. Maintain the heat to keep the lead sweating continuously. After 5 days, a substance will inevitably emerge on the surface of the lead, resembling golden ants. Collect it with a tool; stop once it is all gathered. Weigh the total in liang, grind it into a fine powder, mix with an equal part of sulfur, and form it into granules. Grind again until it becomes a fine powder, place it in a bottle, seal it tightly, and let it dry. Maintain a constant heat of 4 liang, with a 3-cun-thick layer of ash, and heat it for 60 days until it boils and opens. Remove it as before, grind it finely, place it in a bottle, and heat it for another 60 days. When a purple color appears, seal the bottle again. Calcine it over fire until it turns completely red; once cooled, remove it and pour concentrated licorice decoction over it. After it dries, grind it finely into a powder, mix it with cooked rice to form pills the size of mung beans.
